Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of HP L1910A#B1H Scanjet 5590 Digital Flatbed ScannerCustomer Review: Works Great Summary: 4 StarsI saw some bad reviews for this product but I have had no problems with it. It works great and was easy to set up. It is a little noisy, but for the price it was definitly worth it.
Customer Review: HP Scanner Decent Product Summary: 3 StarsThe HP Scanjet 5590 has performed pretty much as described. It was an excellent value, providing lots of features, such as transparency/negative scanning and document feeder, usually found in much pricier units. The user interface could be much better, especially when stacked up against other HP products...and the transformation for negative scanning is needlessly cumbersome. But on the whole it is a solid product, and if you're running Vista 64-bit, it's absolutely the best buy to be had.
Customer Review: If you buy this product you're a damn fool Summary: 1 StarsI am sure if you have read all of the reviews up to this point then you understand that this product is a complete and utter piece of crap. That being said, I am going to post a review anyway due to the fact that this scanner is NOT a 2 1/2 star piece of machinery, the average rating is way too inflated and I figure another 1 star review will help balance things in the right direction.
I have experienced all of the same problems that have already been listed, most notabley:
1. random jams
2. the scanner randomly stops scanning a page for no apparent reason in the middle of the scan
3. lamp light errors
I try to use this device at work and sometimes I will put a stack of documents in only to watch the same stack jam on the 2nd or 3rd page 20 X in a row. On the rare occassion that the moon, the sun, and the stars are all alligned the scanner might get through a few pages, but it will inevitabley jam...someone mentioned a 60% success rate, that number is WAY too high, I have experienced well under a 20% success rate and that is being generous...the real number is closer to 5%.
TOTAL AND UTTER PIECE OF CRAP.
Customer Review: Great scanner!! Summary: 5 StarsI bought my 5590 3 weeks ago. Since then, I have scanned over 5,000 pages, half of which were double-sided, and about 10% have been scanned in colour. Most are A4 in size, but there have been some mixed size batches of pages. Almost all the output has been to searchable PDF files, with the rest to jpg picture files. The quality of all scans has been excellent. I have had about 10 jams in that time, but most of those were my fault - left a few staples in! I have nothing but praise for this scanner. The setup on my XP computer was simple and worked first time. The interface is great. The OCR program that is supplied with the package - Readiris V8 (not the latest version) - works superbly to produce the searchable PDF files for Adobe Acrobat Reader. It is fast enough for me - my timeline is not critical. It is not intrusively noisy. So it has all been good for me.
Customer Review: Good but there are some drawbacks. Summary: 4 StarsI guess i'm a power user - i have a home network a pc and a mac.
The hardware of this scanner is excellent. I had no problems whatsoever with the unit. I did have a lot of problems with the software setup. The actual HP software is a peice of crap in my opinion. It wouldn't scan duplex documents becuase for some reason the software would not let it happen. I also tried it on my mac - which worked fine but created overly large pdf files (18.1mb) for a 6 page document. Finally tried Readiris on the PC which did everything great.
If you give it some patience, and ignore the hp software then it is a good scanner.
