Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of HP Photosmart C4280 All-in-One Printer/Scanner/Copier (CC210A#ABA)

Customer Review: Now I know why Apple is GIVING these away
Summary: 1 Stars

Hello, I got an HP Photosmart C4280 All-in-One FREE with a purchase of a new Apple Mac Pro Computer a few weeks ago. That sounded like a great deal until I got it setup and connected to my Mac Pro. The first time I plugged my Canon Camera Flash Card into the Printer it starts downloading all the photos WITHOUT ASKING ME if I wanted that, which I didn't. Then lastnight, I plugged in the memory card and it starts printing photos without me telling it to do so. Every time I start it up it prints a test page, so I have taken the paper out of this beast. Most of the software that came with this printer is incompatible with Mac OS X 10.5.2, and even what I downloaded yesterday can't find the printer. Yet the printer seems to have a mind of it's own with the camera memory and to top it off there is no manual to explain the operation of this all in one. Despite that it has a camera memory slot, it does not mount it on the desktop so that I can access the camera images from any software of my choosing. So far, this thing reminds me of the Borg in Star Trek, I might like this all in one better IF, I could mount the camera flash on my desktop, if the software could find the printer and if it stopped doing tasks without being prompted. Today I want to print out pictures from the Camera and I can't find the camera memory on the desktop or via any software, even though it's plugged into the front of the printer. I may give up and buy a separate camera flash reader that simply mounts the card on my desktop like a drive. This may actually end up being a good printer, but it's going to require better software and some kind of user manual before it can be configured to be useful. I got what I paid for, it was free.

Customer Review: Oversized paperweight
Summary: 1 Stars

I have been very happy with HP printers in the past, so it was a no brainer to upgrade to a wireless network printer made by them. The print quality is good...when the printer is working. I blame the software/drivers. First of all, to add the printer to the wireless network you need to connect with the USB first to assign an IP address. Then make sure you go into your router and assign a static IP to whatever you setup through the USB connection (HP doesn't mention this in the instructions). Why the printer can't connect to the network like every other wireless device (as in self-connecting to the network and obtaining an IP address)--I don't know.

Then try scanning. You need to launch the HP toolbox to do this. Click on the icon in the system tray, then move onto something else. About 10 minutes later the application will finally start--and then it has communication problems with the printer.

I honestly don't know what HP was thinking. The printer would probably be fine if the software worked. I've never encountered software problems this bad before, so I'm honestly just dumfounded by how HP could let this release make it to the public.

Customer Review: Not not buy this printer if you have Window Vista

Spent over 8 hours over 2 days on the phone with an HP tech and they could not get it to work correctly. HP support on other products I have seems to be really great, just not for this printer for some reason.

The only advice they had for for me was to reinstall the operating system, which did not work.

I have several other USB devices and all work with the HP computer I have.

Well off to get a new printer.

Customer Review: Solving the scanning problem
Summary: 4 Stars

For those experienced scanning problem on Windows 2000, try this:

1. After you have installed the HP C4280 installation files, look for HPQSCNVW.exe (i.e. HP Scanning App file for Windows 2000), it is likely stored here ("C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqscnvw.exe") or under a Hewlett-Packard folder.

If you can't find the above file, try to look for this file: "C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqdirec.exe", it is also a scanning application file.

2. Create a shortcut to this application file on your desktop, and once you have plugged in your C4280 USB to your PC, launch this app and the scanning will work.

The problem you encountered was due to after the installation, HP's app file somehow didn't manage to be created as an icon or shortcut on the desktop.

3. For those on Windows XP and Vista, if you still encountered scanning problem, e.g. USB not connected, etc. Follow steps 1 and 2 above, but look for: HPQSCNVW.exe or HPQTRA08.exe files instead in step 1.

Customer Review: Limited use on Macs
Summary: 1 Stars

The printer works with Macs like it says, but it doesn't have all the featues on Mac that it does with Windows. For instance, it cannot do manual double sided printing on a Mac along with several other features. I would not recommend this product if you use Apple products. It took HP almost an hour to discuss the issues with me that I was having and they simply told me because I had a Mac, I wouldn't get the full package available with this printer. If you have Windows though, it seems to work fine.
